Pulse Oximetry (Blood oxygen saturation)
Pulse Oximetry (oxygen saturation) is a simple, painless, non-invasive test which measures the percentage of oxygen-saturated hemoglobin (Hb) in a person’s bloodstream compared to a well-established standard. This standard is based on the ability of each Hb molecule to carry as many as four oxygen molecules.
Performed by attaching a light clip to a person’s finger, ear lobe, or toe, the test uses both infrared and red light waves to define the level of oxygen saturation in the blood.
Healthy people are generally expected to show an oxygen saturation rate of between 95 and 99 percent. Causes of readings below 90% may include cigarette smoking, circulatory/vascular problems, or diseases of the lung.
